2.2.1. Slope Solutions
a. Find the slope of the line passing through (-6 , 2) and (0, 6).
y2 - y1 / x2 - x1
Plug and chug!
= 6 - 2 / 0 -(-6)
Simplify!
= 4 / 0+6
Simplify!
= 4/6 = 2/3 = m
The slope is 2/3.
b. Find the slope of the line passing through (1 , 7) and (-2, -3).
y2 - y1 / x2 - x1
Plug and chug!
= -3 - 7 / -2 -1
Simplify!
=-10 / -3
Simplify!
=10/3
The slope is 10/3.
c.
Positive or Negative?
The slope is positive because it rises from left to right and is great than 0. (m > 0)
d. Without graphing tell whether the line through (1, 0), (-4, 6) has a positive or negative slope.
First find the slope of the line.
y2 - y1 / x2 - x1
Plug and chug!
= 6 - 0 / -4 - 1
Simplify!
= 6 / -5
The slope is - 6/5
The line has a negative slope because -6/5 is less than 0 and if m<0 then the line has a negative slope.
e. Are the these lines with slopes of m1 =1/3 and m2 =-1/3 perpendicular?
m1m2= -1
Plug and Chug!
(1/3)( -1/3)
Solve!
=-1/3
Because m1m2 does not equal -1, the lines are not perpendicular.
