The Wonderful World Of
Inequalities!!
by KYLIE BRUNNGRABER

Graphing Simple Inequalities:

When graphing simple inequalities, use an
OPEN DOT for < or >
and a
SOLID DOT for or

Graph:
x > 3

1. Place dot on number line.
2. Point arrow in direction that x equals.
YOU'RE DONE :)

Solving Simple Inequalities:

Simple Transformations for solving:
**make sure you use on both sides to even out equation**

  • ADD
  • SUBTRACT
  • DIVIDE
  • MULTIPLY

When multiplying or dividing by a NEGATIVE, reverse the inequality sign.

Solving Inequalities with Variables on ONE side:

5y-8<12     Add 8 to each side.
  +8   +8
5y<20     Divide by 5 to get variable alone.
    5    5
     y<4   FINAL ANSWER

Solving Inequalities with Variables on BOTH sides:

2x+16x-1
-6x   -6x         Get variables to one side.
-4x+1 -1
      -1     -1        Get variable alone.
-4x-2         Divide by -4, inequality sign reverses.
     -4     -4
        x½     FINAL ANSWER

Compound Inequalities:

"AND" problems:
- plot both points on a graph
- connect!

EXAMPLE
-2  x < 1

"OR" problems:
-plot both points on a graph
-instead of connecting, go in whichever direction "x" equals

EXAMPLE
x<-1 or x2

Solving "AND" problems:

-23t-810      Get variable alone. Make sure you add to all parts.
+8    +8   +8
 6  3t  18      Divide by 3 to get t alone.
 3       3      3
      2t6         FINAL ANSWER

Solving "OR" problems:

2x+3<5     or     4x-7>9       Split into two seperate equations.
     -3   -3              +7  +7     Solve like normal.

      2x<2             4x>16
       x<1                x>4      FINAL ANSWER
